On Wednesday 2nd April, Mrs Groen, Mrs Collins and our year five maths team: Haoze, Hasya, Aaria and Dylan travelled to King Edward’s School in Birmingham to compete against eight other independent school teams in a maths competition.

We started the day with some warm up activities before completing a number cross, this is similar to a crossword but the answers are numbers and the order in which the clues are solved requires careful consideration. We had practised our techniques in school and as a team we felt we had scored reasonably well, applying all of our knowledge about palindromes, square numbers, prime numbers and cubed numbers.

This was followed by a mathematical relay race which required our team to split in to two pairs in order to complete reasoning problems in the quickest time possible. Our team worked quickly and carefully to solve the problems whilst remembering to read each question carefully to avoid jumping to the wrong conclusion.

After the relay race we had lunch and a much needed break outside.

In the afternoon, we enjoyed a fun maths lesson with Mr Aggarwal. He made us think about patterns which could be traced without going over a line twice. We related this to the number of vertices on the shape and finally considered how this could be used to plan a route on a map...…..we are all ready to become Deliveroo drivers should we need to(!)

Finally, we were invited in to the performing arts centre to watch a presentation by Dr Ken, he demonstrated how we can use memory tricks to help us in maths and how visual images can be misleading.

The day concluded with the winners announcement and we came third which is an excellent result as the level of maths challenge was exceptionally high! Each member of our team was presented with a medal, trophy and a certificate. Mrs Groen is very proud of our team, they represented our school beautifully and demonstrated many advanced reasoning and problem solving skills. Well done Haoze, Hasya, Dylan and Aaria!!
