Whole School Maths Day
Wednesday, 9 June 2021
On Wednesday 9th June, the whole school took part in a fun-filled, action packed Maths Day. Everyone dressed in mathematical outfits and donated money to the NSPCC. We were delighted to see so many creative ideas for mathematical themed outfits such as dice, calculators, shapes, homemade t.shirts with various mathematical problems on, clocks and of course dominoes (modeled by the staff).
We were treated to a fun-filled day of maths challenges, puzzles, treasure hunts, races, games and more.
Tim from ‘The Problem Solving Company’ worked with each year group to complete shape puzzles including pentominoes, tangrams and a 3D cube. Year 3 had to complete a challenging fraction puzzle using dominoes and Year 5 tried the particularly taxing Tower of Hanoi.
Year 4 created castles using mega blocks and investigated ways to sort the blocks. Year 2 completed a triangular number puzzle where each side had to total ten.
Nursery and Kindergarten matched hexagonal shapes to create flowers but the colours on each side of the hexagons had to match.
Year 1 learned how to spot right angles and they used tangrams to create shapes of rabbits, houses and people.
Year six had to create a number pyramid with given totals on each side, they were also challenged to use 6 pentominoes to create a shape inside with the largest area.
It was wonderful to see the children working collaboratively to problem solve and persevere with the more difficult puzzles in order to succeed.
