On the first Thursday of half term I travelled to Malawi with four suitcases full of 750 toothbrushes and 750 tubes of toothpaste, to be delivered to the children of Luwi School.  As you can see from the photographs below, these were very well received.  Thank you so much to all who donated these to the children.

Malawi is one of the world’s poorest countries and is heavily reliant on the tourism, particularly in the Lake Malawi area where Luwi School is.   It was very sobering to be told that I was the last overseas tourist to leave at the start of the pandemic, and the first to return.  The area has had virtually no income during that time.  A number of children have left the school as their parents cannot afford for them to attend and others as they have been needed to work in the fields and on the Lake as fishermen.  Education is vital to these children to end the terrible poverty that they live with.

Our aim is to set up a feeding programme within the school to ensure that each child has at least one meal a day.  The kitchen is built but they cannot afford the maize flour to make the Nsima, a thick porridge that is their staple food.  We have set up a bank account jointly with the school to enable us to assist in financing this vital programme.

Please give what you can so we can help the children of Luwi School.  This is just one school, but we can make a huge difference to these children’s lives.

Also please keep the toothbrushes and toothpaste coming in, we hadn’t quite got enough for all the children.
