Lunt Fort

Year 3 visited Lunt fort. We travelled there by coach which was lots of fun. When we arrived we were met by a Roman Soldier who would only allow us into the fort if we knew the password ‘sausages.’

Once we were in we learnt how to march properly. We dressed in tunics and were given a shield called a scutum and a small sword called a gladius which we tied around our waist.

Firstly we did combat training in pairs. We practiced moving as a unit which involved making sure our shields were touching so nobody could break the line of defence.

We played Roman footsteps, it was very exciting. Next was our favourite part – we got to fight the Celts. But even better than that the Celts were the teachers! We then had a tour of the site where we learnt a lot about how the fort was built and why it was situated there. We went on guard duty where we could see for miles. Next we had lunch altogether on the picnic benches and then enjoyed looking around the shop which had lots of replica coins and artefacts.

Finally, just before we went home, we looked around the indoor museum. Max and Izabella dressed up as Legionary Soldiers and they said that the armour felt extremely heavy. We passed around a piece of pottery that was 2000 years old.

On the way home we were very tired and nearly fell asleep! It was great being a Roman for the day. Thank you to Mrs Collins and all of the parents that came with us. Written collaboratively by Year 3
