In Kindergarten as part of our ongoing work on festivals and celebrations we have been learning about the Chinese New Year celebration, which is coming up this weekend. As part of our work we learnt about the Chinese Zodiac, found out next year is the Year of the Rat, made our own dragon masks and learnt about Chinese dragon dancing to the rhythm of a drum beat. We also found out that adults give children gifts of money in a special red envelope called a Hong Boa. Each child made their own Hong Boa and the Kindergarten staff filled it with a small money gift (chocolate coins of course!).I was very proud of the way the children showed sensitivity towards different celebrations, beliefs and religions in our discussions, spotting differences and similarities between the festivals.
